Before you sell your precious military coins to a dealer, you should know a few things to get the true worth. Many dealers purchase the challenge coins for a low price from the naïve relatives or family members of the dead collectors. If you have got a collection, you will need to know the true worth of the coins by considering a few parameters. Here are a few things that you should know before you sell those custom military challenge coins, rare pieces and ones that are decades old –
1. Start examining each of the coin by writing down its denomination and date. You will find a small symbol close to the date-mark on the coin. It’s known as mint-mark. Write this symbol in your list as well. Not all challenge coins may have these symbols.
2. Start grading the condition of the coin. A coin that has most of its details intact can be graded as ‘fine’ and another one with excellent luster can be graded as ‘uncirculated.’ If some of the details on the military challenge coins have worn down, you can grade them as ‘fair to very good range.’ Always remember that coin grading is subjective and you don’t have to follow specific guidelines to do that. Just make sure that your grading system makes some sense to the people who might be interested in buying them.
3. Check out a number of listings to determine the price of each coin. You can even search online to find the coin you already own. Take a look at the price that is quoted by the seller and you will have fairly good idea of your coins’ worth as well. Challenge coin dealer will usually quote the lowest possible price unless you are offering these coins through an open bidding. Negotiate, talk to more than one dealer and make the most out of your coins collection.
